How do I approach treatment?

As a naturopathic doctor, I use many different types of therapies to help you and your family. Your treatment may involve one or a combination of the following:

Clinical nutrition: You are what you eat, what you absorb & what you eliminate!

nutritionassesI believe in food as medicine and emphasize that it is the foundation for your wellbeing. We will look at your nutritional intake and assess any areas that may need some changing. We can assess whether or not food sensitivities are present, whether there are nutritional deficiencies and whether your digestive system is in good working order so you are absorbing what you are taking in. Dietary changes and supplements are recommended as needed. Whether in plate form or pill form, nutrition is a powerful element of any treatment plan.

Examples of how I use nutrition include:

  • High dose vitamin B12 may be recommended to someone who is on a meat restricted diet or who takes the birth control pill.
  • High dose turmeric (a traditional Indian spice used in cooking) may be recommended in cases of inflammation.
  • Supplemental hydrochloric acid may be recommended to someone who has a stomach acid deficiency and is bloated with meals.
  • Food sensitivity testing may be done in someone who has a lot of symptoms but can’t quite pinpoint if food is at the root of the issue.
  • A nutrition plan may be given to someone looking to be healthier overall and shed a few pounds.

Botanical medicine: The healing power of plants

botanicalYou are probably familiar with common botanical medicines like echinacea for the common cold, oregano for infections, or calendula for cuts and scrapes. Did you know that there are thousands of medicinal plants that make up a naturopathic doctor’s materia medica? It’s true! Because each plant has a unique medicinal quality, I choose formulas that are best suited for you and your condition. I choose my herbs from professional suppliers who offer organic and high quality product.

Herbs can be given in tea form, pill form or liquid form (called a tincture). If you are on medication from your family doctor, I am careful to double check for any possible interactions.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture

Acupuncture healing beautiful womanMost of us, at some point in our lives, get run down, tired, achy, stressed and overall out of balance. Acupuncture has a powerful way of restoring balance to the body through the use of fine needles that stimulate your meridians (or energy centres). Most people think of acupuncture as being used for chronic pain but it is actually helpful for almost anything. I have helped hundreds of people for things like:

  • Infertility (ivf)
  • Sinus infections
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Insomnia
  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Side effects from chemotherapy
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Nausea in pregnancy
  • Eczema
  • Asthma
  • Side effects from HIV medications

Most people wonder if it is going to hurt or shy away from the treatment because of a fear of needles. Everybody is different, but the majority find the treatments quite relaxing and barely feel the needles since the needles themselves are so small and thin.

Lifestyle counseling: How you live shapes how you feel!

Couple at gymIn order to be well you need balance. Work, kids, relationships, finances and other responsibilities can result in your personal well-being taking a back-burner. Achieving your goals won’t happen over night, but I can help you take your first step onto the path of wellness and can teach you the tools you need to have a healthy lifestyle.

Mental attitudes and emotional states are critically important elements in healing and disease. Addressing all aspects of a your life, identifying and addressing the impact that stress and life events have on a your health is an important aspect of naturopathic treatment. NDs are trained to counsel you on diet, lifestyle, specific stressors, exercise and occupational and environmental hazards that may be impacting your well-being. That is what we mean when we say we must treat the whole person, body, mind and spirit.

homeopathyHomeopathy is dilute natural substances that are used to stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal. It has been around for hundreds of years and is used as a key part of health care in many countries around the world. In fact, it is becoming so popular in Canada that we are now seeing remedies popping up on the shelves in chain grocery stores! You can use homeopathy for just about anything from cold sores to seasonal allergies to teething.

I use homeopathy in my practice in the form of pellets and liquids. It is especially helpful for patients who are more sensitive including children, the elderly and those who have reacted strongly to medications and supplements in the past. It is very safe and effective.

A homeopathic flu shot is available seasonally. You can read more here (link).
